Reeling and Staggering – Psalms 107:27

In Psalms one hundred seven the Psalmist shared about, “They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters. These see the works of the LORD, and his wonders in the deep. For he commands, and raises the stormy wind, which lifts up the waves thereof. They mount up to the heaven, they go down again to the depths: their soul is melted because of trouble”, and in chapter one hundred seven and verse twenty-seven of Psalms the Psalmist said, “they reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man” where we read,

They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, and are at their wits’ end.

The verse begins, They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, … The Psalmist began with the words, “they reel to and fro” or “they, the ships upon the sea, move in circles, march in procession, celebrate, dance and hold a solemn feast”, “and stagger” which means “and quiver, totter, shake, wander, move, waver and tremble” “like a drunken man” or “similar and in likeness to an intoxicated or habitual drinking person whether male or female”. The Psalmist shared how the ships upon the sea move in circles and march in procession while wandering and wavering like a person who is intoxicated.

The verse continues,… and are at their wits’ end. The Psalmist added the words, “and are at” which means “and exist at the point of” “their wits’ end” or “their, the people upon the ship are at the end of their wisdom, skill, shrewdness and prudence’”. The Psalmist said the people within their ship upon the sea were at the height of their wisdom and prudence for how to deal with their situation.

When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist referred to the horrific conditions upon the sea that made those upon a ship to lack the wisdom of how to solve their dilemma. Sometimes God will allow us to get to the end of our own ability to solve problems so we will call upon Him for help. We cannot save ourselves from the penalty of eternal death for our sins, so Jehovah God sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for our sins. When we believe and trust in Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and rescue us when we have no idea what to do to solve our problems.

Next time the Psalmist said, “they cry unto the LORD in their trouble”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
