A Garment Which Covers – Psalms 109:19

In Psalms one hundred nine David said his enemy, “loved cursing, so let it come unto him: as he delighted not in blessing, so let it be far from him. As he clothed himself with cursing like as with his garment, so let it come into his bowels like water, and like oil into his bones”, and in chapter one hundred nine and verse nineteen of Psalms David said, “let it be unto him as the garment which covers him” where we read,

Let it be unto him as the garment which covers him,

and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.

The verse begins, Let it be unto him as the garment which covers him, … David began with the words, “let it be unto him” or “allow and permit it, the cursing of David’s enemy, exist toward him, David’s enemy” “as the garment” which means “similar to and in likeness to the clothing, apparel and vesture” “which covers him” or “that enwraps, envelops and clads him, David’s enemy”. David appealed to Jehovah God to allow his enemy to be clothed with the same vesture of “cursing” his enemy wore.

The verse continues, “… and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually.” David added the words, “and for a girdle” or “and that the strong belt” “wherewith he is girded continually” which means “in which he, David’s enemy, is constantly, perpetually and unto perpetuity appointed, put on and worn as armor”. David wanted his enemy to wear the same strong belt of “cursing” that his enemy wore as armor.

When we think through the words in this verse, we see how David wanted his adversary to have “cursing” surround him like clothes and a strong armor belt with which he clothed himself. David considered his enemy’s “execration and vilification” to be worn by him, and David felt he should be reciprocated the same as he wore. There is a principle in the Bible called the law of reciprocity, and whatsoever a man sows, that shall he also reap. (See Galatians 6:7-8) God is the judge, and He has provided an escape from the penalty of death for our sins because He sent His Son Jesus to die on the cross in our place. When we believe and trust in Him our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and vindicate us before our adversaries according to His perfect plan and will.

Next time David says, “let this be the reward of my adversaries from the LORD”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
