The Reward of My Adversaries – Psalms 109:20

In Psalms one hundred nine David said of the “cursing” of his enemy, “Let it be unto him as the garment which covers him, and for a girdle wherewith he is girded continually”, and in chapter one hundred nine and verse twenty of Psalms David said, “let this be the reward of my adversaries from the LORD” where we read,

Let this be the reward of my adversaries from the LORD, and of them that speak evil against my soul.

The verse begins, Let this be the reward of my adversaries from the LORD, … David began with the words, “let this be the reward” or “allow and permit this, the reciprocation of cursing upon David’s enemy, exist as the recompense and wages” “of my adversaries” which means “belonging to my, David’s, resisting, opposing and attacking ones” “from the LORD” or “separate and apart from Jehovah who is the existing One and the proper name for the One True God”. David wanted his enemy’s recompense to be from Jehovah God and similar to what his enemy had carried out.

The verse goes on to say, “… and of them that speak evil against my soul”. David continued with the word, “and of them that speak evil” or “and pertaining to them, the people whether male or female who utter, declare and proclaim wickedness, disagreeableness, malignancy, misery and displeasing” “against my soul” which means “in opposition to my, David’s, heart, mind, will, desires, living being and seat of emotions and passions”. David also wanted reciprocation to be toward people who uttered and declared misery and wickedness in opposition to his heart, mind and will.

When we consider the words in this verse, we see how David wanted Jehovah God to “reward” his opposing foe with the same vilification that he poured out upon others, and he wanted God to judge the people who uttered wickedness and malignancy in opposition to him. David desired that God repay his enemy, and this is best for us as well. Paul the apostle wrote, “the Lord reward him according to his works” when speaking of Alexander the coppersmith who did him “much evil” (See 2 Timothy 4:14), and indeed Jehovah God is best One to carry out judgment. God loves people, and He has offered salvation and forgiveness to everyone through His Son Jesus who died on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield to Him, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and bring judgment upon those who oppose Him and us according to His perfect plan and will.

Next time David says, “do you for me, O God the Lord, for your name’s sake”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.

Until tomorrow…there is more…
