In Psalms one hundred six the Psalmist said, “We have sinned with our fathers, we have committed iniquity, we have done wickedly”, and in chapter one hundred six and verse seven of Psalms the Psalmist said, “our fathers understood not your wonders in Egypt” where we read,
Our fathers understood not your wonders in Egypt;
they remembered not the multitude of your mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.
The verse begins, “Our fathers understood not your wonders in Egypt;” The Psalmist began with the words, “our fathers” or “the Psalmist and the people of Israel’s male ancestors and progenitors” “understood not” which means “did not perceive, have insight, give attention to, consider or ponder” “your wonders in Egypt” or “your, Jehovah God’s, wonderful, surpassing, extraordinary and distinguishing acts and deeds within Egypt whose name means land of the Copts and was a country at the northeastern section of Africa, adjacent to Palestine, and through which the Nile flows”. The Psalmist referred to how his and the people of Israel’s fore-fathers did not perceive Jehovah God’s wonderful and extraordinary deeds within the country of “Egypt”.
The verse continues, “they remembered not the multitude of your mercies; but provoked him at the sea, even at the Red sea.” The Psalmist added the words, “they remembered not the multitude” or “the fore-fathers of Israel did not call to mind or bring to remembrance of the abundance, numerous and plentiful amount” “of your mercies” which means “pertaining to your, Jehovah God’s, goodnesses, kindnesses and faithfulness”; “but provoked him” or “however and moreover were contentious, rebellious, refractory and disobedient toward Jehovah God” “at the sea” which means “at the large body of water”, “even at the Red sea” or “indeed at the large body of water known as the Red sea”. The Psalmist referred to when the people of Israel did not recall the abundance of goodnesses, kindnesses and faithful times from Jehovah God and rather were contentious and rebellious at the “Red sea”. (See Exodus 14:11-12)
When we meditate upon the words in this verse, we see how the Psalmist mentioned the time when the people of Israel forgot how Jehovah God cared for them by releasing them from Egypt, and they rather murmured and became contentious against Him when they felt trapped by the Red sea. God was aware of their situation, and He would be the answer to their troubles. However, they became rebellious against Him. God loves Israel, and He has watched over them during the most difficult of times. He cares for us as well, and He sent His Son Jesus into the world to die on the cross for the sins of all mankind. When we yield our lives to Him as our personal “Savior and Lord”, He will forgive our sins, grant us everlasting life and be good, kind and faithful to us even when we accuse Him otherwise.
Next time Psalmist says Jehovah God, “saved them for his name’s sake”, so read ahead, and we shall join together then.
